Collection and Handling:

             Collection: Fresh tissue, sterile fluid or processed sputum in sterile container preferred. 
Also acceptable:  Paraffin embedded tissue
Unacceptable:  Tissues in formalin
Handling:Submit fresh tissue and fluids to the laboratory within 2 hours.  If transport is delayed, or specimen will be shipped or sent by courier, keep specimen at -20°C, and ship on dry ice. Paraffin embedded and formalin-fixed tissues can be kept at room temperature.
Amount: Diagnostic yield is generally proportional to specimen size. 10 mL fluid and 0.25 to 0.5 g tissue preferred.
Minimum: Tissue 0.1 g; Fluid 0.5 mL
